Cleaning and Disinfecting with Vinegar

For some of us, living in the city means that some people live in smaller than average spaces.  Personally, I love the convenience of our two bedroom studio but it bothers me to use cleaning agents such as clorox or ammonia because the smell quickly travels to all corners of the apartment.  While I do like the smell of steamed clorox, I know it can't be all that healthy for my little one.  He'll be 18 months soon, yet my anxieties and worries when it comes to how I am handle things for him are still as fresh and nerve wrecking as the day he came home.  The mentality of a parent is such a weird thing for me because I notice how aware I have become with everything in life, in my routines and in my thoughts and actions.  As an active learner, I learned that we need some exposure to germs, especially him so that his immune system could become stronger.  And I'm sure we could all agree that cleaning with water only isn't the brightest idea out there.

Well,  few years ago I was employed as a coordinator with a dialysis clinic.  My point in mentioning this is that I distinctly remember two things when it comes to cleaning up bacteria. The first was that the units and seats were wiped down with alcohol after each treatment.  And the second was that spills were cleaned up with VINEGAR.  Of course, after remembering this while cleaning with 409 - which clearly states "harmful to humans and animals" - I researched Vinegar as a cleaning agent.

I was excited and relieved to learn that vinegar works well in killing most bacteria, mold and germs.  Needless to say, I filled up a spray bottle with vinegar and started spraying everything from the door knobs to the kitten's bedding.  As you can see in the picture, I even filled up his old tub with all the plastic toys I could find and then dumped them into a solution of water, vinegar and some dish soap.  I let them soak for about 10 minutes then I rinsed and dried them off before putting them back into his room.

I felt and still feel good about my new cleaning agent and the smell of vinegar isn't that bad, especially when I think about that versus breathing in harmful cleaning fumes.  In my opinion, which based on some research and my experience in the medical world, I am convinced that Vinegar is an effective tool for sanitizing the home.  I have learned to trust myself when it comes to making decisions because whenever I have doubted myself, later on down the line I usually realize that I had it right all along.  I admit, I do wish there was some way to home test the levels of bacteria found in the apartment and on the toys and so forth.  Not because I doubt my choice of cleaning agent but because I think it would be great to know the "scientific" outcome of my daily cleaning efforts.

Actually, I might be going off on a tangent but a bacteria tester would also be great for testing the levels of  bacteria in washing machines at laundromats, trays and tables at restaurants, equipment at a playground, or even our very own steering wheels.  Sure, I could just walk around with alcohol wipes and be the antibacterial maniac but I'd love to personally test and confirm what it actually accomplishes.  Just sayin'!

The CitiKitty Cat Genie My Way

After thinking about how great it would be to toilet train the kitten, I decided to use my sitz bath since its in the closet gathering dust.  So, I took it out and before I prepped it I wrapped up her kitty litter box, in plastic, could you believe she pee'd right on top of the plastic.  This made me realize, toilet training is possible.  After I cleaned up that mess and made her new potty, she happily hopped in and began scratching away.  I think tonight I will put the litter in the bathroom and tomorrow on the toilet.  I don't see why I should wait a week and confuse her.

And so,  I decided to put it on the toilet.  She did use it bust since shes still a kitten and this is only her second week with us, she's kind of jumpy and so I had to put it back in the hall when she was done.

Teeth And Gum Care For Your Little One

Before you get too overwhelmed with your baby’s immunization, feeding, bath and diaper changes, pause for a while and remember to take care of his teeth and gums too. True enough, taking care of a baby is hard work and caring for his gums and soon-to-emerge teeth is all part of the job. So, if you want your precious angel to have a perfect smile when he or she grows up, you have to learn how to start proper dental care as early as now.

• Before the first tooth comes out
Even if you don’t see any tooth sticking out yet, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have anything to take care of inside your baby’s mouth. A fetus develops tooth buds at around 6 or 7 weeks. These remain in the jaw until it’s time for them to come out 3 to 6 months after the baby is born. This is the reason why one should take care of the gums and make it a habit of cleaning it during bath time. Save on toothpaste because you won’t be needing it at this time. Instead, use a clean gauze or damp cloth to rub the gums gently. If you start this routine early, you won’t have a problem moving on to a toothbrush.
• When teeth start coming out
When your baby’s teeth begin erupting at around 6 months old, you can start using a baby toothbrush. Look for ones made with a small head, bigger grip handle and soft bristles. If you have managed to clean your baby’s mouth, gums and teeth daily, you can still save on toothpaste. Gently brush the teeth in and out two times a day. Make a single swipe on your baby’s tongue using the brush to get rid of bad breath causing bacteria. As soon as the toothbrush looks worn out, replace it with a new one.
• It’s time to pay a visit to the dentist
It is recommended to bring your baby to the dentist between six and 12 months. By this time, your baby should have few erupted teeth. An early trip to the dentist can help prevent tooth decay in baby teeth, ensuring stronger and better permanent teeth when they grow older. This will also expose your child at an early age to the importance of proper oral hygiene and will allow your dentist to spot and address dental problems early on.
• Fluoride facts
Your baby’s teeth need a modest amount of fluoride to strengthen and protect it from tooth decay. You can get fluoride from bottled water, municipal water or prescription fluoride drops. Either of the three, you must ensure that your baby is getting just enough. Too much fluoride can lead to fluorosis which can cause your baby’s permanent teeth to have white spots. It is also advised by experts to allow your child to use fluoride toothpaste only upon reaching the age of two. Give them a pea-sized amount every time he brushes his teeth.
These are just some of the things you have to take note of when caring for your little one’s teeth and gums. When your child grows up, he will only have you to thank for a perfect set of pearly whites.

The newest addition to the family.

A cute kitty I brought home from the bodega.  He wants to name her Jaky but I was thinking Koki (Coqui) since she looks like a mix of Kiki and Koko.  Here are some pics of all of them.

Kiki and Koko haven't live here in over a year now...  Koko took off one day and Kiki, well, unfortunately Kiki ended up in the wrong hands.  Someone was cat sitting for us and didn't tell me that he had a mentally ill sibling.  Needless to say, who know what she did with or to the cat.  I called the police but they made me feel even more helpless but telling me to take her to court and sue.  How can you put a dollar value on a pet, a part of your family??
